Term 3 Here We Come!

Hope you all have had a fantastic holiday! Term 3 starts a little sad as two of our students have moved away. We wish them both the best of luck with their move and their learning future.
Having been on a mini-conference during the holidays, we will be learning and using a lot more different and fun programs that we will share with you all.
An exciting term ahead, with the Science Roadshow on the first day back, dog safety lessons as well as a display from the Police Dogs in the second week, then bring on the Rugby World Cup! We will be having an official opening ceremony on September 9, with more details to come.
Camp preparations are well under way. We will be having a variety of fundraising events to help cover the costs of the buses, as well as individual chocolate sales to help cover your child's camp costs will begin again.
We will keep everyone updated with the fantastic learning that we will be doing this term, and enjoy the precious little days left of the holidays!

What A Term!!!!

Wow!!! What a very full on term we have had. Speeches went extremely well and congratulations to Amy, Kavan and Majenta who were our Yr 5's who made it through to the syndicate finals, and to Marius, Katie and Jonathan who made it through for our Yr 6's. We also had some fun with our science experiments working towards our Science fair investigations. We had some very thorough investigations for teh Science Fair. We learnt that smell does effect the way we taste food, that caffeine makes your heart rate increase and that our reactions get a little better with age. Running makes your heart beat faster than skipping or walking, the colour of a drink effects whether we like it and can guess the flavour correctly, and the effects of energy drinks on our teeth! Congratulations to The Lab Rats who came first in the Waiuku School's Science Fair for Rotten Energy. I will never look at, or drink, a V again!. Also congratulations to The Brainy Bunch for their Reaction Robbers investigation who came second in the Science Fair, and also to Colourful Concoctions who came in third.
Book Week was also a success with a fantastic Book Character Parade on Friday afternoon. What a lot of effort that went into the costumes. Keep a look out for the slide show of the photos.
Maori Language week was also a success, and some wonderful artwork about our families was produced.
Looking forward to next term with our study on The Rugby World Cup. Go The All Blacks!!!!

We are also writing speeches, with a fantastic Speech Snatcher show on Wednesday next week (please remember your $3 for this). We have 3 way conferences at the end of the term as well.

C'mon Guys, Get Firewise!!

Hello,

Today was filled with lots of exciting discussions around fires. We discussed different pictures showing safe and unsafe situations, brainstormed what to do if we see a fire, and explained how important smoke alarms are and where they should be placed inside our homes. We talked about how to feel a door before we open it, and escape routes. All children have been asked to discuss and practice escape routes with their families, and have been given stickers to put in their safe meeting place.
All of this is in aid of our Firewise show tomorrow. We will update you with how that went.

Keep you posted!!

Water Safety

Water safety is important to learn because too many people die in New Zealand. Learning water safety when you are young is so important as you are prepared for what is out there in the future.

Water is cold. You can get cold shock from falling into cold water. Cold shock makes you get a very cold feeling then you struggle and then you drown.

When you go on a boat you always need to wear a lifejacket so if you fall off the boat a lifejacket will always keep you up. To make sure your lifejacket fits, put two fingers down the strap and make sure they don't fit down.

When you are in a boat, canoe or a jet ski you need a radio or a cell phone to contact people if you capsize. It must be in a sealed bag so it does not get wet.

I think learning water safety is important because statistics prove that we lose a lot more people than any other country because of drowning.

Our Water Safety Practical

Water Safety

We need to learn water safety so we can be safe in, on, and around water. If people did not do water safety a lot of people would die.

Most deaths are made by not wearing a LIFEJACKET or by not reading the rules. It is important to get used to a lifejacket because if you are in water you will know what to do without panicking. The HELP position is the Heat, Escape, Lessening, Position. If you are with 2 or more people you move into a huddle position and if are in a huddle you will be in a circle. This is important so you don't drift away.

If you are in a boat the most important rule is to wear LIFEJACKET. In boats if you see a big boat SLOW DOWN or you can be under it in Minutes. The skipper is the driver for the boat and is responsible for the crew. If someone dies, the skipper will pay huge fines or go to jail. A good skipper will make sure that the boat has good supplies and will talk to the crew.

Have you ever tried to save someone and could not help? All you need is a long piece of rope. untangle the rope first. After you have untangled it, slide it in half, then throw it out to the person who needs rescuing, but do not hit them on the head. Then pull until they reach you. It is easier if you are standing higher than the water.

Water safety is very important to learn because if people did not learn water safety, people would die a lot.

Water Safety

We need to learn water safety because too many people die in the water. We need to check our lifejacket. You need to be able to do the H.E.L.P. position. It is important to learn water safety.

Water Safety

What a wonderful week of water safety that we all had last week. I was very proud of every student who tried something new, and put themselves out of their comfort zone. We all learnt something new about how to be safe in, on and around water. Well done Syndicate 4!!!

Our Learning

Exciting news!!! Room 10 are learning how to do greenscreening!! We have been busy filming ourselves in front of a greenscreen (thanks to Mrs Clydesdale for letting us use hers), reading our own stories from Writer's Workshop. We are now up to the next stage of downloading these onto imovie, where we will be able to add a background. Once this is all finished and we are happy with the results, we will post on here for you all to see how fantastically awesome we are!!

Writer's Workshop

In Room 10 we participate in Writer's Workshop. During this time we are allowed to write anything we want, in any form we wish. This allows us to get our 'creative juices' flowing. To help us in this journey, there is a programme that we can use both at school and at home, to allow us to write a collective story. You can find it at this link: http://room10waiuku.ietherpad.com/1
Please add to our story, remembering to start with describing what you can see, then what you can hear. We then add a character and an action, before developing our story further.
I am looking forward to reading your contributions :o)

All our love and thoughts are with you.

Week 6 Update

Updating you all on what is up and coming for Room 10 this term. Chocolate sales are well underway. Congratulations to all of you who have taken this on board and are well on your way for fundraising for camp. Remember that all profits made will go towards your costs for camp in Term 4.

Water Safety is coming up in Week 8. Notices have been sent home outlining what will be happening and the costs involved. We will be working closely with Coastguard New Zealand who have developed very informative and practical sessions with keeping ourselves safe in the water.
Congratulations to our Group Day swimmers. You all did a fantastic job at representing our school. The same goes for our many competitors in the Tryathalon. Have you all checked out the photos in the Post and the Franklin County News??

Talent Fest auditions are well on their way. Ms Edwards and myself have seen some amazing acts from the junior school, and we can't wait for our seniors to show us what they've got to share.

Well, signing off for now, and please remember to leave us all a comment :0)

Week 3

Well everyone,

We are halfway through week 3. We have officially moved into our new classroom, and everything is up and running now. All of our students have been creating some fantastic pieces of work with their learning. Don't forget we have our Meet The Teachers evening tomorrow from 7pm in the hall. It would be great to see you all there.
We had the Power of One Anti-bullying show today. Taught us some great messages about the different types of bullying there is and what we can do if we or someone around us is being bullied. Well done Jonathan for taking part in this show, and for showing the senior school his acting skills!!!

Looking forward to getting more learning up and around the class so feel free to pop in and see how we are all doing:)
